Pepcid, famotidine information

Other names: Pepcidine

Famotidine 40MG - pepcid generic
What Is Famotidine
Famotidine Edigen (Pepcid, Pepcidine) 40 mg tablets is an anti ulcer agent that belongs to the group of medications called long acting histamine H2-receptor antagonist.

Famotidine Edigen 40 mg tablets is indicated for the treatment of duodenal ulcer, benign gastric ulcer, hypersecretory conditions such as Zollinger Ellison syndrome and in prevention of relapses of duodenal ulceration and of benign gastric ulcer. Symptomatic relief of reflux disease that failed to respond to hygienic-dietetic measures and antacid therapy. Oesophagitis associated with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.

Before Taking Famotidine (Pepcid, Pepcidine)
Do not take Famotidine Edigen 40 mg tablets if you are hypersensitive to any component of this product.
Take special care with Famotidine Edigen 40 mg tablets if gastric malignancy has not been excluded by your doctor prior to initiation of therapy of gastric ulcer with Famotidine. Symptomatic response of gastric ulcer to Famotidine therapy does not preclude the presence of gastric malignancy.

Caution should be exercised when treating patients with moderate or severe hepatic or renal dysfunction. Since central nervous system (CNS) adverse events have been reported in patients with moderate and severe renal insufficiency, longer intervals between doses or lower doses might be necessary in these patients.
Therapy should always be stopped gradually and as indicated by your doctor so as to prevent relapses.

Pregnancy
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medication.
Treatment with Famotidine (Pepcid, Pepcidine) is not recommended for use in pregnancy and it should be prescribed only if clearly needed. Before a decision is made to use Famotidine during pregnancy, the doctor should weigh the potential benefits from the drug against the possible risks involved.

Lactation
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medication.
Famotidine is detectable in human milk. Nursing mothers should either stop taking this medicine or should stop nursing.

Use in children
The safety and efficacy of Famotidine in children have not been established.

Use in the elderly
When Famotidine (Pepcid, Pepcidine) was administered to elderly patients no increase in the incidence or change in the type of medicine related side effects was observed. No dosage adjustment is required based on age alone. Dosage adjustment in the case of moderate or severe renal impairment may be necessary.

Effects on ability to drive or use machines
Famotidine is unlikely to affect your ability to drive a car or operate machinery. However, caution should be exercised until you know how you react to this medication.

Taking other medications
Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, even those not prescribed. Famotidine has not been shown to interact with other medicines. Studies have shown no significant interference with the disposition of compounds metabolized by the hepatic microsomal enzymes. In humans, Famotidine is unlikely to interact with warfarin, propranolol, theophylline and diazepam. In addition, studies with Famotidine have shown no augmentation of expected blood alcohol levels resulting from alcohol ingestion.

How To Take Famotidine (Pepcid, Pepcidine)
Follow these instructions unless recommended otherwise by your doctor. Always remember to take your medication. Your doctor will determine the duration of the treatment with Famotidine Edigen 40 mg tablets. Do not suspend treatment before. Famotidine Edigen 40 mg tablets should be taken orally with some water. If you have problems taking the tablets ask your doctor or pharmacist for help.

The usual doses are as follows:
Duodenal ulcer: The recommended daily dose of Famotidine (Pepcid, Pepcidine) is 1 tablet (40 mg of Famotidine) at night. Alternatively, 20 mg every 12 hours may be administered. Treatment should continue for four to eight weeks, but the duration of treatment may be shortened if endoscopy reveals that the ulcer has healed. In most cases of duodenal ulcer healing occurs within four weeks on this regimen. In those patients whose ulcers have not healed completely after four weeks, treatment should be continued for a further four week period.

Maintenance Therapy: For the prevention of relapse of duodenal ulceration, it is recommended that therapy with Famotidine be continued with a daily dose of one 20 mg tablet taken at night. However, it should be taken into account that controlled studies have not been extended beyond one year.

Benign Gastric Ulcer: The recommended dose is 1 tablet (40 mg of Famotidine) daily, taken at night. Treatment should continue for four to eight weeks but the duration of treatment may be shortened if endoscopy reveals that the ulcer has healed.

Maintenance Therapy: For the prevention of recurrence of benign gastric ulcer, the recommended dosage is 20 mg taken at night, which may be given for up to one year.

Gastro esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): The recommended dosage for gastro  esophageal reflux disease is 20 mg of Famotidine (Pepcid, Pepcidine) taken orally twice daily. For the treatment of esophagitis associated with gastro esophageal reflux disease, the recommended dosage is 1 tablet (40 mg of Famotidine) twice daily taken orally. If after four to eight weeks of treatment there is no response endoscopic diagnosis should be performed.

Zollinger Ellison syndrome: Patients without prior anti-secretory therapy should be started on a dose of 20 mg. every 6 hours. Dosage should be adjusted to individual patient needs and should continue for as long as indicated clinically. Doses up to 800 mg. daily have been used for up to one year without the development of significant adverse effects or tachyphylaxis. Patients who have had prior anti-secretory therapy may be switched directly to Famotidine at a starting dose higher than that recommended for new cases; this starting dose will depend on the severity of the condition and the last dose of the H2-antagonist previously used.

Dosage adjustment for patients with moderate or severe renal insufficiency:
In adult patients with moderate or severe renal insufficiency, the dose of Famotidine may be reduced to half the dose or the dosing interval may be prolonged to 36 - 48 hours as indicated by the patient's clinical response. If you consider the effect of Famotidine Edigen 40 mg tablets to be too strong or too weak, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

If you take more Famotidine Edigen 40 mg tablets than you should, immediately call your doctor, pharmacist or nearest hospital.

There is no experience to date with overdose. Patients with hyper-secretory conditions have tolerated doses up to 800 mg daily without the development of significant adverse effects. In case of accidental ingestion, the usual measures to remove unabsorbed material from the gastrointestinal tract, clinical monitoring, and supportive therapy should be employed. In the case of an overdose or accidental ingestion, immediately consult your local poison control center.

If you forget to take Famotidine Edigen 40 mg tablets do not take a double dose to make up for the missed doses. Consult your doctor.
