Macrobid, nitrofurantoin information

Other names: Nitro Macro, Furadantin, Macrodantin, Urantoin

Properties
Nitrofurantoin, the active ingredient of Macrobid, is a chemotherapeutic agent specific for acute or recurrent urinary tract infections caused by bacteria.
Macrobid (Nitro Macro, Furadantin, Macrodantin, Urantoin, Nitrofurantoin) is active against bacteria that are usually resistant to antibiotics and sulfonamides, such as Proteus species and Pseudomonas species and it does not promote the development of resistant strains.

Indications
Macrobid is indicated for the treatment and prevention of all bacterial infections of the genito-urinary tract due to susceptible bacteria: pyelitis, pyelonephritis, cystitis, prostatitis and urethritis. Chemoprophylaxis in urologic surgery or examinations.

Dosage
Adults: 1 - 2 tablets 3 times per day.
Children: Up to 2 years of age: Half a tablet 3 - 4 times per day.
2 - 8 years of age: 1 tablet 3 - 4 times per day.

Instruction For Administration
Macrobid (Nitro Macro, Furadantin, Macrodantin, Urantoin, Nitrofurantoin) should be taken with food or with a glass of cold milk, never on an empty stomach.
Due to the enhanced absorption of Macrobid, in comparison with macrocrystalline or sustained release preparations, it is hardly ever necessary to exceed the above mentioned doses.

Contraindications
Severe impairment of hepatic function or severe impairment of renal function.

Incompaatibilites
Urine acidifying agents increase the digestive absorption of nitrofurantoin, whereas alkalinizing agents and nalidixic acid decrease it.

Side Effects
Macrobid (Nitro Macro, Furadantin, Macrodantin, Urantoin, Nitrofurantoin) may cause nausea and vomiting, these side effects can be avoided by taking your medication during meals. Occasionally, allergic reactions and polyneuritis have been reported (in long term therapy); these side effects subside after termination of therapy.

Overdose
Acute overdose of Macrobid (Nitro Macro, Furadantin, Macrodantin, Urantoin, Nitrofurantoin) is not likely to occur due to its high therapeutic efficiency. In the case of accidental ingestion, which can only occur with an excessive intake, the usual measures to promote the rapid excretion of the medication (gastric lavage and forced diuresis) should be employed.
