The active ingredient is azithromycin (D.O.E.). It contains an azithromycin base (equivalent to azithromycin dihydrate). The excipients are: anhydrous lactose, magnesium stearate, sodium lauryl sulfate and maize starch. The ingredients of the capsule are: gelatin, titanium dioxide (E171) and black ink containing soya lecithin, black iron oxide (E172), antifoam DC 1510, N-butyl alcohol, industrial methylated spirits 74 OP and special varnish for ink (Shellac).

WHAT IS ZITHROMAX - Azithromycin
ZITHROMAX contains Azithromycin:
Azithromycin belongs to a group of antibiotics called macrolide antibiotics. It is a "broad-spectrum" antibiotic; with activity against a wide range of bacteria or "micro-organisms" which cause infections. It is used in the treatment of the following infections:

  • upper and lower respiratory tract infections, such as otitis media, sinusitis, pharyngitis/tonsillitis, bronchitis and pneumonia,
  • skin and soft tissue infection,
  • sexually transmitted diseases.

    BEFORE TAKING ZITHROMAX - Azithromycin
    Do not take Zithromax - Azithromycin if:
  • You are allergic to azithromycin, or any other macrolide antibiotic or any of the other ingredients present in Zithromax azithromycin.

    Take special care with Zithromax - Azithromycin
  • If you suffer serious impairment of hepatic function. If this is your case inform your doctor.
  • If you develop diarrhoea during or once finished treatment with this medication, inform your doctor.
  • As with other antibiotics, treatment with this medication may result in fungal superinfection. If this is your case inform your doctor.
  • If during Zithromax azithromycin treatment, you experience any allergic reaction, characterized by symptoms like, itching, redness, skin rash, swelling or difficulty in breathing. If this occurs inform your doctor immediately.
  • In infants of less than 6 months.

    Administration of Zithromax - Azithromycin with food and drinks
    Zithromax - Azithromycin should be taken at least one hour before or two hours after meals with a glass of water.

    Pregnancy and lactation
    Consult your doctor or pharmacist before you take any medication. If you think you may be pregnant, or are trying to get pregnant or are breastfeeding, inform your doctor. The administration of Zithromax - Azithromycin is not recommended during pregnancy and lactation, unless your doctor believes that the potential benefits of treatment to the mother outweigh the possible risks to the developing fetus or infant.

    Effects on ability to drive and use machines
    There is no evidence to suggest that Zithromax - Azithromycin may have an effect on a patient's ability to drive or operate machinery.

    Taking or using other medications
    Notify your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, or have recently taken any other medication, even if bought without a prescription.

    Zithromax - Azithromycin may interact with other medications.
    Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any of the following medications:
    - Ergot derivatives (such as ergotamine, which is used to treat migraine).
    - Cyclosporin (a medication used in patients with transplants).
    - Digoxin (a medication used to treat cardiac arrhythmias).
    - Antacids, cimetidine (medications used for indigestion). If taking antacids and Zithromax - Azithromycin, it is recommended to avoid simultaneous administration of both medications at the same time of the day.
    - Coumarin-type oral anticoagulants (medications used to prevent blood clots).
    - Nelfinavir, zidovudine (medications used to treat infections caused by human immunodeficiency virus).
    - Terfenadine (a medication used to treat allergies and hay fever).
    - Rifabutin (a medication for the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis and nonpulmonary infections caused by mycobacterium).

    HOW TO TAKE ZITHROMAX - Azithromycin
    Follow these instructions when taking this medication unless advised otherwise by your doctor. Remember to take your medication. Your doctor will inform you of the duration of your treatment with Zithromax - Azithromycin. Do not discontinue treatment before the period recommended by your doctor as you may suffer a relapse. The dosage should be established by your doctor depending on your individual requirements and the type of infection. In order to attain optimal efficacy, strictly follow your doctor's indications with regard to the dosage and duration of the treatment.

    The general guidelines regarding dosage and frequency of administration are as follows:

    Adults (including elderly patients): 500 mg. daily for 3 consecutive days, which is a total dose of 1500 mg. Alternatively, the same total dose can be taken over 5 days with 500 mg. given on the first day, then 250 mg. daily on days 2 to 5. For the treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, since the dosage is if 1000 mg. taken as a single oral dose, it is convenient to use the presentation of ZITHROMAX 1000 mg. powder for oral suspension in sachets, although 4 capsules of 250 mg. can also be taken.

    Children and adolescents: In order to adjust the dosage easier, it is convenient to use ZITHROMAX 200 mg. / 5 ml. powder for oral suspension in bottles. If you think that the action of ZITHROMAX 250 mg. hard capsules is too strong or weak inform your doctor or pharmacist.

    Directions for use and method of administration
  • Zithromax - Azithromycin is taken orally.
  • The capsules should be swallowed whole.
  • Swallow the capsules with a sufficient amount of fluid - a glass of water.

    If you take more Zithromax - Azithromycin than you should, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately. In the case of an overdose or accidental ingestion call your local poison control centre immediately. If you miss a dose of Zithromax - Azithromycin do not take a double dose to make up for the missed doses.

    POSSIBLE ADVERSE EFFECTS: Zithromax - Azithromycin
    Like all medications, Zithromax - Azithromycin may have adverse effects.
    Most of the adverse effects that appeared during clinical trials were mild to moderate in nature, reversible after discontinuation of treatment and mainly affected the digestive system, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. Potentially severe adverse reactions like laryngeal oedema (due to an allergic reaction) or impaired hepatic function, which is accompanied by yellow colouring of the skin, may occur on rare occasions.
    - Thrombocytopenia (decrease in the number of platelets in the blood) and transient episodes of mild reduction in neutrophil counts (decrease in the number of white blood cells).
    - Aggressive reactions, nervousness, agitation, anxiety, dizziness/vertigo, convulsions, headaches, somnolence and hyperactivity.
    - Hearing disturbances and exceptionally taste perversion.
    - Heart trouble.
    - Gastrointestinal disorders such as anorexia, nausea, vomiting/diarrhoea (rarely resulting in dehydration), loose stools, abdominal discomfort (pain/cramps), constipation, flatulence, severe diarrhoea and rare reports of tongue discoloration.
    - Abnormal liver function (rarely severe) and impaired renal function.
    - Allergic skin reactions such as pruritus, rash, photosensitivity, oedema or urticaria (hives). Rarely, serious skin reactions have been reported.
    - Arthralgia
    - Vaginal infection caused by bacteria or fungus (vaginitis).
    - Fungal infections, tiredness, numbness and allergic type reactions.

    STORAGE OF ZITHROMAX - Azithromycin
    Store Zithromax - Azithromycin at a temperature below 30°C. Do not refrigerate. Store in its original package.

    Expiry
    Zithromax - Azithromycin must not be used after the expiry date indicated on the package. Keep Zithromax - Azithromycin out of the reach and sight of children.
