PANTECTA 40 mg. gastro resistant tablets, Pantoprazole Each gastro resistant tablet contains:
The active substance: 40 mg pantoprazole (as pantoprazole sodium sesquihydrate).
The other ingredients are the excipients: sodium carbonate, mannitol, crospovidone, povidone K90, povidone K25, calcium stearate, propylene glycol, hypromellose, methylacrylic acid-ethyl acrylate copolymer (1:1), polysorbate 80, sodium lauryl sulphate, triethyl citrate, titanium dioxide (E171), yellow iron oxide (E172) and brown printing ink Opacode S-1-26514 (the printing ink contains: Shellac, red iron oxide (E172), black iron oxide (E172), yellow iron oxides and hydroxides (E172), soya lecithin MC thin, titanium dioxide (E171) and polydimethylsiloxane).

WHAT IS PANTECTA
Pantecta 40 mg comes in blister packs that contain 14 or 28 gastro resistant tablets. They are yellow, oval, biconvex, film coated tablets imprinted with "P 40" on one side. Pantoprazole belongs to a group of medications called proton pump inhibitors (which work by decreasing the amount of acid your stomach produces). It is an antiulcer medication and it is used for the treatment of gastric ulcer and / or duodenal ulcer, moderate and severe reflux oesophagitis and ulcers associated with Helicobacter pylori infection, used in combination with other antibiotics and conditions where the stomach produces very large amounts of acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

BEFORE TAKING PANTECTA
Do not take PANTECTA 40 mg:
- If you are allergic to pantoprazole, other medications that belong to the same group or any of the other ingredients of PANTECTA.
- In combination with antibiotics used for eradication of H. pylori in patients with moderate to severe hepatic or renal dysfunction.

Take special care with PANTECTA 40 mg.:
- Inform your doctor if you suffer impaired renal or hepatic function,
as dosage adjustment may be required.

If any of the abovementioned situations occur only once, consult your doctor.

Pregnancy and lactation:
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before you take any mediation.
Before commencing treatment, inform your doctor if you are pregnant or suspect that you are pregnant of if you are breastfeeding. Your doctor will decide whether it is convenient for you to use this medication or not.

Driving and using machines:
There are no known effects on the ability to drive and use machines.

Taking other medications:
Pantecta 40 mg may interfere with the absorption of some drugs due to the decrease in gastric acidity, like in the case of ketoconazole.
Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, even those not prescribed.

HOW TO TAKE PANTECTA
Follow these instructions unless recommended otherwise by your doctor.
Always remember to take your medication.
The duration of the treatment will be determined by your doctor. Do not suspend treatment before, even if you feel better, because you may not gain the benefits this medication is expected to have for you.
Pantecta 40 mg. gastro resistant tablets should be swallowed whole with some water. They should not be chewed or crushed.

Pantecta 40 mg. should be taken orally.
The usual recommended oral dosage is one tablet (40 mg.) per day, taken one hour before breakfast. The dosage may be increased by your doctor to 2 tablets (80 mg.) per day depending on each patient. If you take 2 tablets (80 mg.), you should take the first tablet one hour before breakfast and the second tablet before your evening meal.
The usual dose for the treatment of ulcer associated with Helicobacter pylori infection is 1 tablet (40 mg.) of Pantecta 40 mg. in combination with other antibiotics as indicated by your doctor. For the long-term management of conditions where the stomach produces very large amounts of acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, patients should start their treatment with a daily dose of 2 tablets (80 mg.). Thereafter, the dosage can be titrated up or down by your doctor as needed using measurements of gastric acid secretion to guide.

In patients with impaired renal function or impaired hepatic function or in elderly patients: Your doctor will indicate the dose to be taken; it may differ from the abovementioned doses. Always follow the instructions given to you by your doctor. If you consider the action of Pantecta 40 mg. to be too strong or too weak inform your doctor or pharmacist.

If you take more Pantecta 40 mg. tablets than you should:
In case of an overdose or accidental ingestion, immediately consult your doctor or pharmacist or your local poison centre (Servicio de Información Toxicológica). Telephone 91 562 04 20. However, if the amount taken is very high, go to your doctor straightaway or go to the emergency department of the nearest hospital and take this leaflet with you.

If you forget to take Pantecta 40 mg.:
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Then go back to taking the medication the following day as indicated by your doctor.
Do not take a double dose to make up for the dose that you missed.

POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS
Like all medications, Pantecta 40 mg. can have side effects.

Gastrointestinal disorders
Ocasionally you may suffer gastrointestinal complaints such as upper abdominal pain, diarrhoea, constipation or flatulence. There have been less frequent reports of nausea.

Nervous system disorders
Ocasionally you may suffer headaches and less frequently vertigo or disturbances in vision (blurred vision).

Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders
Ocasionally you may suffer allergic reactions such as pruritus and skin rash (and in isolated cases urticaria and angioedema) and severe skin reactions such as erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, Lyell-Syndrome and photosensitivity.

Liver and biliary system disorders
Rare reports of increased liver enzymes (transaminases, gamma-GT) have occurred.
Very rarely there have been reports of severe hepatocellular damage leading to jaundice (yellowing of the skin) with or without hepatic failure.

Musculoskeletal, connective tissue and bone disorders
In individual cases muscle pain subsiding after termination of therapy may occur.

Psychiatric disorders
In individual cases depression subsiding after termination of therapy may occur.

General disorders and administration site conditions
In isolated cases you may experience fever and fluid retention (peripheral oedema), both subsiding after termination of therapy.

Metabolic disorders
Elevated triglycerides have been reported in individual cases.

Immune system disorders
Treatment with Pantecta 40 mg. may cause in isolated cases anaphylactic reactions including anaphylactic shock.

Renal and urinary disorders
In isolated cases interstitial nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys) may occur.

If you experience any of these side effects, inform your doctor immediately and he / she will decide whether you should suspend or continue treatment with this medication.
