Atacand 4-16 mg. tablets candesartan cilexetil
The active ingredient in Atacand 4-16 mg. tablets is candesartan cilexetil (I.N.N.). Each tablet contains 4, 8 or 16 mg. candesartan cilexetil. The other ingredients are: carmellose calcium, hydroxypropyl cellulose, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, maize starch and macrogol.
WHAT IS ATACAND
ATACAND 4-16 MG. tablets come in blister packs of 14 white round tablets with a score and marked A/CF on one side and 004 on the other.
Candesartan cilexetil is a type of medicine called an angiotensin II receptor antagonist which, by blocking the effects of the hormone angiotensin II, causes relaxation of the blood vessels and results in a lowering of blood pressure.
ATACAND 4-16 MG. tablets is indicated for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure).
BEFORE TAKING ATACAND
Do not take Atacand 4-16 mg. tablets:
- If you are allergic to candesartan cilexetil or any of the ingredients in Atacand.
- If you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant or are breastfeeding.
- You have a severe liver disease.

Take special care with Atacand 4-16 mg. tablets:
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before you take this medication:
- If you are taking other medications which help lower your blood pressure, particularly diuretics.
- If you are taking any other medicines, including those you have bought without a prescription.
- If you have any heart, liver, or kidney problems.
- If you suffer from lactose intolerance.
- If you are taking lithium.
- If you are taking potassium-sparing diuretics, potassium supplements, salt substitutes containing potassium or other drugs such as heparin.
Patients with impaired hepatic function must inform their doctor before initiating treatment with ATACAND. In this case your doctor may prescribe a lower starting dose of 2 mg. once a day (half a tablet of Atacand 4-16 mg.) (see section "3. How to take Atacand 4-16 mg. tablets")
Atacand should be carefully titrated with thorough monitoring of blood pressure in patients with severe renal impairment or end-stage renal disease, including patients on haemodialysis.
An initial dose of 4 mg. may be considered in patients at risk for hypotension (for example, with intravascular volume depletion) (see section "3. How to take Atacand 4-16 mg. tablets").
This medication has been prescribed for your current condition only. Do not use it later for any other condition unless directed by your doctor. Do not give this medicine to anyone else even if their symptoms seem similar to yours.
Atacand 4-16 mg. tablets is not recommended for children.
Taking Atacand 4-16 mg. with food and drink:
It does not matter whether you take it with or without food or drink.
Pregnancy and Lactation:
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medication. Do not take Atacand 4-16 mg. tablets during pregnancy and / or lactation. If you become pregnant whilst taking Atacand 4-16 mg. tablets see your doctor immediately.
Effects on ability to drive and use machines:
The treatment of high blood pressure may lead to dizziness or weariness in some patients. Make sure you are not affected in this way before driving or operating machines.
Taking other medications:
Always inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medication, even those bought without a prescription.
The antihypertensive effect of Atacand may be enhanced by other antihypertensives.
The concomitant use of Atacand with potassium-sparing diuretics, potassium supplements, salt substitutes containing potassium, or other medicinal products that may increase potassium levels (e.g. heparin) may lead to increases in serum potassium.
Reversible increases in serum lithium concentrations have been reported during concomitant administration of lithium with Atacand.
As with other antihypertensive agents, the antihypertensive effect of Atacand may be attenuated by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as indomethacin.

HOW TO TAKE ATACAND
Follow these instructions unless given other indications by your doctor. Remember to take your medication.
Your doctor will indicate the duration of your treatment with Atacand 4-16 mg. tablets. Do not stop taking your medication unless your doctor tells you to stop. Do not take more than the dose recommended by your doctor.
Posology and method of administration:
Dosage must be individualized. Carefully follow your doctor's instructions. It is important to keep taking ATACAND every day and as your doctor has told you. The instructions in this patient information leaflet should remind you of what the doctor has said.
Dosage, frequency of administration and duration of treatment:
The recommended initial dose and usual maintenance dose is 8 mg. (2 tablets of Atacand 4-16 mg.) once daily. Your doctor may increase the dose to reduce your blood pressure to the desired level. This may be up to 16 mg. (1 tablet of ATACAND 16 mg.) once a day. It is best to take your tablet at the same time each day, e.g. in the morning.
If you have liver problems your doctor may prescribe a lower starting dose of 2 mg. (1/2 tablet of Atacand 4-16 mg.) once a day.
The starting dose is 4 mg. in patients with renal impairment, including patients on haemodialysis.
An initial dose of 4 mg. (1 tablet of Atacand 4-16 mg.) may be considered in patients at risk for hypotension (such as patients with intravascular volume depletion).
If you think that the action of Atacand 4-16 mg. tablets is too weak or too strong for you inform your doctor or pharmacist.
If you take more Atacand 4-16 mg. tablets than you should:
If you take more than the recommended number of tablets, contact your doctor or pharmacist (chemist) as soon as possible.
In the case of an overdose or accidental ingestion, contact your local poison control centre (Servicio de Información Toxicológica. Telephone: 91 562 04 20).
If you forget to take Atacand 4-16 mg. tablets:
If you forget to take a dose, just carry on with the next dose as normal. Do not take an extra tablet to make up.

POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS
Like all medicines, some people taking Atacand 4-16 mg. tablets may occasionally experience unwanted effects.
Effects that have been experienced include dizziness, headache, back pain, and cold or flu-like symptoms.
Unwanted effects reported very rarely are swelling of the face, lips, tongue and/or throat, feeling sick, muscle or joint pain, back pain, rash, hives, itching, jaundice (yellow skin and/or eyes) or raised liver function tests and hepatitis (inflamed liver).
Changes in kidney function have been rarely reported (particularly in patients with existing kidney problems or heart failure). On very rare occasions changes in potassium and sodium levels, red blood cell and white blood cells levels may occur. Such changes are usually detected by a blood test.
If you suffer from any of these symptoms, or if you notice any other unusual or unexpected symptoms, talk to your doctor or pharmacist (chemist). If you develop swelling of the face, lips, tongue, eyes and/or throat or jaundice, contact your doctor immediately.
If you notice any other reaction not mentioned in this leaflet, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
STORAGE OF ATACAND
Keep Atacand 4-16 mg. tablets out of the reach and sight of children.
Do not store above 30°C.
Store in its original packaging.
Do not take Atacand 4-16 mg. tablets after the expiry date shown on the carton.
