Swine flu influenza is caused by a new virus which most of us have no resistance for. Contradictory to most flus, mainly young people have fallen ill, though most have only become mildly ill. Of those who have needed hospital treatment, approximately half suffered from an underlying disease, while the other half were previously healthy people aged between 20 and 30.

Swine flu, as commonly called the new influenza A (H1N1), is caused by a new virus strain. The virus is a mixture of influenza viruses from pigs, poultry and humans passed only to humans. Since no one previously had this flu humans most likely lack any resistance to it.

People of all ages can suffer from swine flu, but so far it is mainly youths and adults under 30 who have fallen ill, while older people have been affected to a lesser extent. A study of the immune system in elderly people indicates that they have been exposed to a relative of the virus and therefore may have some resilience. Explaining why so many young, otherwise healthy people have fallen ill as they have never suffered from any similar influenza viruses.

Fortunately, most people that contract the flu only become mildly ill, with a very small proportion of the patients needing hospitalization. About half of these severely ill patients suffered from an underlying condition such as chronic pulmonary disease or cardiovascular disease. As with all influenza epidemics, there have been deaths all around the world.

The infection was first recognized in the United States and Mexico. With the flu quickly gaining a foothold internationally, the world the World Health Organization, WHO, rated it as a pandemic in June 2009. A pandemic is an epidemic that exists in several continents, spreading easily between people.

How do we prevent or cure swine flu? A new vaccine named Pandemrix, developed by GlaxoSmithKline has just been approved and can be used in adults and children over six months old and even in pregnant women.

There is also an oral antibiotic against the Swine flu Tamiflu, Oseltamivir that is prescribed for treating or preventing influenza. Tamiflu is an antibiotic that can be purchased online without prescription as a precautionary treatment or even after symptoms manifest.
