Penicillin: The Most Commonly Prescribed Antibiotic

PenicillinPop quiz: when I say antibiotics, what is the first word that pops into your head?  It probably isn’t generic Augmentin, despite the fact that it is a highly effective medicine.  Despite all the products available, the first thing to come to most people’s minds is most likely Penicillin.

You probably remember your parents giving it to you when you were younger and not feeling well.  As you grew up, you probably heard stories of it being used to treat adults with STDs.

Without a doubt, Penicillin is the most commonly prescribed antibiotic today and some of that reputation has got to be due to its long history of use.  As far back as the middle ages, bread with a greenish blue mold was used to treat wounds in Europe.  This is most likely a very early version of Penicillin.

It was officially discovered, though, in 1928 by Alexander Flemming, a Scottish scientist and Nobel laureate who proposed that if you grow Penicillium notatum in the appropriate substrate, it would exude a substance with antibiotic properties.  Australian Howard Walter Florey and German Ernst Chain, both Nobel laureates, along with English biochemist Norman Heatley built on Flemming’s theory and developed Penicillin as a medicine.

It became widely known through successfully treating Syphilis and Gonorrhea as well as many other common bacteria.  Today, it is still widely used and you can even buy Penicillin without prescription and order Penicillin Online.

However, like with any antibiotic, many bacteria have adapted to it and in many cases, something more resilient is needed.  In the late 70s, a British scientist working at Beecham developed Co-amoxiclav which is a combination of Amoxicillin, Penicillin, Potassium clavulanate and a Beta-lactamase inhibitor and is more commonly known as Augmentin.

You can buy Co-amoxiclav in pill form with a prescription or without in the form of generic Augmentin, which can be affordably ordered online.  While Penicillin is still the most popular antibiotic, it is not necessarily still the most effective in all cases.  Generic Augmentin may just be what you’re looking for, even if it’s not what your mother gave you.
